Geography

Denmark, the smallest Scandinavian country, consists of the peninsula Jutland and about 470 islands of different size. The inhabited islands are connected by bridges or ferries with the mainland. In the south Denmark borders on Germany. The landscape consists of fruitful flat country, heath landscape, Birch forests, small lakes and fjords. Greenland and the Faeroeer stand under the sovereignty of the Danish king house, have however its own administration. The Faeroeer ("sheep islands") consists 6 uninhabited islands in the North Atlantic between Scotland and Iceland with 44.800 inhabitants of 18 inhabited and (1998). Points of main attraction are delightful nature and the species-rich bird world. Direct flights connect the capital Thórshavn (15,800 inhabitants) with Copenhagen and Billund. The Faeroeer and Greenland are represented by the Danish tourist board. Greenland has its own chapter.


System of Government

Parliamentary monarchy since 1953. Condition of 1953. A chamber parliament (Folketing) with 179 members (ever 2 representatives of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands). Choice every 4 years. Head of state: Queen Margrethe II., since 1972. Head of the government: Differently Fogh Rasmussen, since 2001. Denmark is European Union member.


Language

The language is Danish. Many Danes speak also German, English or French. On the Färöern is Goverment language Färöerish, Compulsory schooling is Danish.
