Geography

Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Slowaki Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy border on the Country Austria. Nearly half of this mountain country is covered by forest, highest collection is with 3798 m of the Grossglockner. There are five large landscapes: the east alps, the alpine and Karpatenvorland, the Vorland in the east, Viennese the basin and the granite and Gneishochland. The roof stone mountains in upper Austria, the Tiroler mountain summit, the Kaerntner lakes, the salt chamber property, the Danube area and the deep forests of the Steiermark are only some the numerous points of attraction of this popular tourist country.


System of Government

Parliamentary-democratic republic since 1918. Condition of 1920, last change 1998. Two-chamber parliament: Upper House of Parliament with 64 and national council with 183 members. Head of state: Thomas Klestil, since 1992. Head of the government: Wolfgang dish, since 2000. Term of office of the Federal President six years. The Federal Government must enjoy the confidence of the national council, whose delegate is selected every four years. The members of the Upper House of Parliament are sent directly from the land days. Austria is European Union member.


Language

The language is German; in addition in Suedkaernten Slovenian is spoken, in the castle country speaks one also Croatian and limits Hungarian. In Vienna there are Turkish, Czech and slowakische groups of peoples. Many Austrians speak also English. The regional dialects deviate z. T. strongly from the high German.
